I got some responses to my call for Halloween-themed builds, so I'm going to give them some love as promised. First, we have a lovely graveyard dancefloor, which can be yours courtesy of Csteph Submariner and SLexchange. I've tested it, as you can see in the Gallery; it's definitely danceable! And don't weep for me, dancing all alone; as a werewolf, I'm obliged now and again to do the odd Monster Mash.

(Thanks, Chris!)

%Gallery-9385%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New Species of Sunfish and Albatross Discovered

Cube3, creators of the CubePODz, have updated their recreational vehicle line with the new Sunfish, a 2-seater, and the Albatross, a 10-seater. I loved the Syd Mead-esque design of the CubePOD, and these new additions have some of that going on, as well as a sleek retro feel to them. From the press release:

"We should take this opportunity to make the virtual worlds we'll live in optimistic and suggestive of a new frontier. Many of the tired cyberpunk visions that made good fiction 20 years ago are horrible places to really spend our time in. To me that's maybe fun for an RPG, but not for a world we're spending hours in daily now" says designer Larry Rosenthal.

The three vehicles sell within SL for base prices of 600L, 1200L, and 2000L based on the model and style. To see some screens of the new vessels, check out this gallery; for more of a look, go in-world to Theta.

(Thanks, Larry!)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What to do with Megaprims

Filed under: Building, Linden Lab, Op/Ed

If I had to decide which Second Life feature was the most profoundly useful to me, it wouldn't be the group tools, or streaming movies on a prim. Sculpted prims would certainly be in the running, but the "lumpy" nature of sculpties makes them less revolutionary than I had hoped (they aren't very good for, say, a car fender.) I would have to say, the coolest, most useful, "thank god I have them" feature, summed up in one word is:

Megaprims.

But I'm a little worried right now. Linden Lab appears to be fishing around for what the reaction would be to the removal of megaprims in a recent blog post by Michael Linden. Some cynics may say this is nothing more than an obligatory symbolic gesture before they go ahead and remove megaprims anyways. But I'm not cynical! I'm all sunshine, baby! So go ahead and read what Michael's has to say over at the Official Linden Lab blog. I'll take a shot at addressing his concerns here.

Parcel Encroachment - Michael is (rightfully) concerned about the abusive uses of megaprims. However, features such as llPushObject and the self-replication enabling combo of llGiveInventory and llRezObject open the door for potential abuse, indeed they are the foundation of most scripted griefing today. But these functions are never removed because of the compelling legitimate uses for them. It would therefore be inconsistent for Linden Lab to use this excuse to justify the removal of megaprims. Abusers should be punished, not people who need these tools.

Megaprims cause problems for Physics engines - If this is true, force prims over a certain size to become phantom. Problem solved. Ta-daaaa! Though I do wonder just how bad the physics problems really are. Megaprims seem to have some oddball bounding box issues, but I haven't seen performance problems due to them. I would also expect Havoc 4 to alleviate these problems, not make them worse. But like I said, if this is really a problem, don't remove them, make them phantom.

Graphic engine problems with prims over 256m - Well there are two problems. Render distance is calculated from the center of a prim to the user. So if your draw distance is set to 64 meters, and you are 65 meters from the center of the megaprim, you could be standing on it without ever seeing it. This isn't great but it's not the worst rendering problem I have ever seen in SL and it's hardly enough justification for removal. Also, Gene Replacement suggests on the Linden Blog that Second Life should calculate draw distance from the bounding box rather than the center of the prim. This seems like a reasonable fix.

The second problem is that large object culling is based on object size. Tiny objects get culled before large ones. Apparently megaprims, being mega and all, never get culled. I would think this was a very simple problem to fix. Once an object size is greater than 10m, simply default to using the value of 10m when calculating when objects get culled. But if I missed something here, then fine. Make the maximum size for megaprims 256 meters and this problem is solved too.

Now, if the worst case scenario actually unfolds and I somehow resist the urge to throw myself onto the megaprim funeral pyre, then here are some absolutely essential replacement features Linden Lab should provide to help recover from this devastating loss.

Arbitrarily Large Radii - Say you wanted to create a very large cylinder, one with a radius of 30 meters. Using smaller 10m cylinders would create a scalloped effect, and using flat prims will not look rounded. You can increase the smoothness by using a larger number of smaller prims to create the larger shape, but this could drastically increase prim usage.
One solution is to allow arbitrary radii when calculating the curved surfaces of prims. The prim size itself need never exceed 10m, but curved part of, say, the slice of a cylinder can be made shallower and shallower as the imaginary radius moves further and further away. You can then combine these 10meter prims to form one flawless mega cylinder. The same goes for any prim with curved surfaces including spheres, tubes, and tori.

Built-in tools for large shape creation - Next, Linden Lab should simplify the creation of large shapes using smaller prims by adding build tools that help with this task. There are scripts floating around that help with this process, but they're clunky, limited, and sometimes difficult to work with. Instead, Linden Lab should add large-shape construction to the resize tool. Imagine I have one single 10 meter prim. I edit it and resize it to 30 meters. Now when I examine this oversized sphere I notice that Second Life secretly replaced my ONE prim with 150 prims (or however many is necessary,) all automatically shaped and fitted to create my sphere. The offsets and repeats on the textured surfaces of each prim are automatically adjusted to ensure the texture resize behaved exactly as if the shape were one large prim.

This idea isn't perfect. For one thing, how will these prims know that they should reduce back to one single prim if I resize the sphere back down to 10m? It may have to be a one-way street, but it's better than nothing.

In scanning the comments on Michael Linden's blog entry, it would appear that the community really does want to keep megaprims. I sincerely hope that Linden Lab's mind isn't already made up on the subject. Let's keep megaprims around and send Linden Lab some mega-love for allowing them!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Trademarks to be enforced soon in SL?

Filed under: Building, Clothing, Stories, Business, Mixed Reality, Great Builds
Digital Urban is a blog I wouldn't have normal come across, but it showed up on my radar today, with an article, at least in part, about branding issues and the likelihood of prosecutions for breaking them. There is a nice link out to the original piece in Retail Bulletin too, which covers some of the potential issues of bringing a suit - finding the name of the avatar doing it, jurisdictional issues and the cost of bringing the case against the probable returns.

Digital Urban is worth a look as well. It's the blog of a UCL project to map urban environments in digital media. That might be somewhat tangential to us you think, but have you visited Manchester, Liverpool, the Sistine Chapel, Amsterdam, etc? That's the kind of thing the blog looks at. Oh, and if you map places in the UK, you're breaking the Ordinance Survey's copyright guys, so be careful! Now, to the best of my knowledge, a UK government sponsored part of Manchester Council built the Manchester sims. Surely they've got to be easy enough to find and sue, if the OS are so inclined?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Plastic Duck ... Our Hero? A Case for Megaprims

While perusing the Modeling Certification wiki page I noticed an interesting requirement being proposed ... "over-sized prims," specifically, megaprims. The fact that these essential building tools would be mentioned as a must-know for all professional content creators comes as no surprise to me. I use them constantly as do most of my peers. But would Linden Lab actually make them a requirement for certification? That would really surprise me because of the somewhat uncomfortable history the lab has with megaprims.

Folks have requested larger sized prims for as long as I can remember. I personally made a request almost two years ago on the official Second Life forum, but to no avail. Then along came a guy named Plastic Duck.

Plastic Duck, A.K.A. Gene Replacement is a name as familiar as John Gotti, Kevin Mitnick, and Lee Harvey Oswald to the average Second Life resident. He's Linden Lab's public enemy number one. When Plastic Duck was invited to speak on CBC Radio, Linden Lab's director of Marketing, Catherine Smith, personally wrote to the station warning of Plastic's "griefing and generally anti-social behavior, harassing the furry community, and spamming with penis images."

True to his nature, Plastic Duck's megaprims are actually the result of a wanton disregard for Linden Lab's TOS. Exploiting the fact that prim size limitations were enforced by Second Life's client software, Plastic simply created his own makeshift client which allowed him to log on and create prims of any size he damn well felt like. Sadly, he only felt like creating a small handful of megaprims before Linden Lab repaired the exploit by placing prim size enforcement in the server software. This ended the potential for oversized prims forever.

Since then, Plastic's small handful of megaprims is worth their weight in gold to professional content creators. They've appeared as an essential part of many popular builds and are frequently used by many of the big content creation companies.

Used properly, megaprims can reduce prim counts by eliminating the need to construct large shapes out of numerous smaller prims. For example, if you wanted to create a flat roof for an enormous building measuring 100m x 100m without using megaprims, you would have to construct it out of 10x10 prims for a total of 100 prims. Not only does this consume prims needlessly, but it also results in the presence of unnecessary geometry data for all the hidden surfaces between adjoining prims. In our example we would have four surfaces per prim which is 400 surfaces minus the 40 surfaces that face outward. That's 360 surfaces that serve no purpose at all and are not even seen.

Megaprims also make certain larger shapes possible such as large cylinders and spheres. If you want to create a sphere with a diameter of 10m or smaller, then you simply rez one. If you want to make a sphere that is 11m in diameter, you have to write or obtain a script that will calculate the shapes and positions of dozens or even hundreds of smaller prims to form your sphere.

Megaprims are also helpful for creating large unified texture animations. Say you wanted to create a vast sea of rolling waves, a sky of looming clouds that roll by, or the magical waves of the northern lights. Since there's no way to coordinate texture animations from prim to prim, using hundreds of little 10 meter prims wouldn't work. Each prim would show its own sequence of the animation causing the scene to be disjointed like a broken mirror. With megaprims you can animate a huge texture seamlessly.

Here's another tid-bit you may not have known ... you can turn a megaprim into an oversized sculpted prim! Handy, huh?

So here is the dichotomy, one of the most reviled villains in Second Life is responsible for creating a feature that has been requested for years and is now so useful and so ubiquitous that developers may eventually be required to learn about it for official Linden Lab certification. You aren't allowed to create megaprims, but you are allowed to use them for legitimate purposes ... in fact you may be required to.

It's like double parking in New York City. It's illegal, but if law enforcement actually put an end to it, the city would grind to a screeching halt because it would be impossible for goods and materials to come and go. Many delivery companies simply factor the inevitable parking tickets into their cost of doing business and the city gives them a nod and a wink because the violations are considered a valuable source of revenue.

I say it's time to stop the nodding and winking. Megaprims are here to stay, but in their current form they are needlessly limited. Thanks to Plastic Duck, we have 20x20x.5 meter prims. Thanks to Linden Lab we don't have 30x30x.5 meter prims. It's time for Linden Lab to be the hero and allow unlimited prim sizes as part of the standard user interface. Even if prims larger than 10 meters are forced to be phantom, the benefits to the community and the beauty of builds will be worth that minor limitation.

Sadly, until Linden Lab gives us this long overdue feature, Plastic Duck (you know ... that evil guy) will always have an important and legitimate place Second Life's history.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Tools of the Trade - Sculptypaint

Cel Edman brings us SculptyPaint. Currently at version 0.9, it already rocks so hard that strong men faint. You want a fast, free way of making sculpties without all that tedious mucking about with applications and exporters? This is it. This is totally it.

That said, you won't be going crazy with it in the first few minutes. Look at the tutorials, and fiddle with the tools a bit before you try to do much with it. The tutorials are simple, but will show you what you need to know to get going.

Grab it (for Windows, Linux, or MacOSX). You'll need Java 1.6 before you do anything, so get that too. Created by the EM Cars team (Zak Beltran, Fire914 Flaman, LUCA Rosmer) and frageurs Hock of MH Motors, the island features top notch content and car designs, all in a low lag environment.

The sim isn't fully launched yet, although it is public. Those interested in owning a piece of the Vegas-looking city can obtain a rental space here by paying the rental fee to boxes on the sims or by contacting LUCA directly. There is also an opportunity to sign up for residential space in their swanky hotel, the only one on the island.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Relay For Life sims open now!

Filed under: Building, Shopping, Exploration, Great Builds, Arts and Culture
Relay for Life has been in Second Life for years now, and for those of you that don't know, this weekend marks the celebration that the fundraising is done for the 2007 fiscal year! After this next week, the sims will disappear and fundraising will begin for 2008. As of 6pm SL time, they've raised L$26,885,975, which is a few hundred dollars short of $100,000 USD!

In the next couple of days, I'll be posting information and schedules for events revolving around SLRFL. A lot of work went into this from many teams. There will be auctions, pageants, and themed laps around the track, which takes over an hour to walk!

The official event starts tomorrow, Saturday, July 28th, at 2pm SL time (PDT), but don't let that stop you from checking it out now! I can still smell the surf on my unwashed bikini (available soon on eBay.)

Speaking of vacation, some loyal Second Life Insider readers may recall that earlier this December I wrote about our beach houses, the very ones where I spent a sizable chunk of every summer since I was a little girl. It was by modeling the location that my family holds near and dear that I was able to make my Grandmother understand what I do for a living.

Well, I have an interesting twist.

Between rousing games of volleyball and mouth watering meals of lobster, I decided to take the occasional photo which I passed along to my Second Life pals. The reaction from them, most of whom having spent extensive time hanging with me in the virtual beach house, was an interesting complement to my Grandmothers reaction. While Yia Yia (what us Greeks call our Grandmothers) was intrigued by exploring the virtual version of a RL location, my friends were fascinated at seeing the RL version of a virtual location they were already familiar with in SL. The lovely stpaulsub Clio even noted in one photo, "Your little cousins left their shoes scattered around the ground, just like in your build!"

Someday I need to invite one of my SL loved ones to the beach with me. What a strange experience it must be to have intimate and precise knowledge of a location before you ever actually visited! Just imagine, they could make a bee-line to the bathroom, find the surfboards on the side of the house, or even locate my secret stash of Oreos ... all within seconds of visiting.

Taken to the next level, perhaps Second Life could be used to train law enforcement and military personnel on the layout of a mission location prior to conducting an operation. Intimate knowledge of all the exits, nooks, and hideaways could give our troops a home-team advantage in a location they have never seen before in their lives.

But for now, I may do some training myself. I'm going to flawlessly infiltrate the beachhead, seize and neutralize my beach chair, and listen to an ocean surf CD. Vacations never seem long enough.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Transformers Enter Second Life & Forget to Transform

Filed under: Building, Gadgets, Graphic Design, Entertainment

Michael Bay's summer blockbuster, Transformers, was successful, in part, because it conjures up fond childhood memories for a generation of grown-ups.

The official site of Transformers, the movie, is developed by Liam Kanno, the same talented content creator who designed a replica of the movie set of 300 ("This is Sparta!") and Live Free or Die Hard . The build is impressive in its artistic features although it's fully enclosed and a bit confusing to navigate its labyrinth of tunnels and corridors. You can also find two official Transformers movie avatars, distributed for free, under the statue of frozen Megatron.

For those who grew up loving the transformers, the charm of these legendary characters is their awesome ability to change appearances between robots and ordinary cars/vehicles/mechanical things. In fact, I'd dare say that the essence of transformers is that they ... transform! And this is where Liam's avatars fall short.Although the avatar builds themselves display a high degree of detail and depth in robot mode, they only have robot mode. And this type of content is symptomatic with real-world ventures into Second Life.

However, where the official site fails to provide this, there are quite a few residents who have successfully created fully scripted transformers. Some fans were hanging around the other day when I visited and I was passed on a free and full-mod version of Starscream. More images of Liam's beautiful work and my shiny new, transforming Starscream avie can be found here.

Thanks to Calum Clifton for the heads-up!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Class Report - NCI Building Class, Advanced Jewelry making

Filed under: Building, Clothing, Educational, Events, Stories

There was great anticipation in the air as we awaited the arrival of our instructor. At last last, we too would be possessors of knowledge of the recent art of 'nano' and 'tortured' prims, our hands as eagerly at the ready over CTRL-3 as a mistress' over her whip and chains.

RoseLinUK London, the instructor, arrived at the top of the hour, and class commenced directly, with introductions and the distribution of class materials.

At a cracking pace, we spat out wires, gems, beads and necklace frames to the measured text and instructions of Instructor London. We followed a trail well-worn by previous travellers - tapping in the parameters as they were fed to us, seeing the results for ourselves as prims writhed and wriggled before us. However, there were also many points at which we were exhorted to go forth after the class and test the prims unto their very limits - along with a couple of cautionary tips about what those limits are.

Short version: Not a ground-breaking or revolutionary class from the perspective of teaching theories, but a good, solid class ably using the techniques of teaching by example and by laboratory work, filled to the brim with a wide selection of the basic information required to make jewelry. Recommended!

While it's a good overview, what it sorely lacks are photos of the covered areas. I've visited a few of the places mentioned in the article, but couldn't get a shot of the Bartlett House. On Wednesday I had the chance to visit the completed build, pictured above, and get a sneak preview of their forthcoming exhibitions.

These exhibitions are due to open on 1st July and are well worth a visit if you're interested in art and/or art in Second Life. There are three exhibitions in total - more pictures and some description below the fold...

The Fine Art exhibition has a very traditional pictures on the wall, although the pictures are rather contemporary as you might expect from art students. This is a teaser of the start of the exhibition.

Next up we have the Graphic Arts and Design exhibition. This is, at first look similar, except it tends to be photographic from what I saw. A closer look... and reading the signs like the one under this photo of some of the exhibitors suggests there's something else going on, and, indeed, there is. If you touch the exhibits they change, size, shape, position and the artwork on display. It's quite fascinating to play with, and the reason for this photo... these are the only pictures that don't change - they take you to the student's portfolio instead.

Last, but by no means least we have an exhibition that could only happen in SL. The Contemporary Creative Practice exhibition contains a mixture of artistic styles, in that it could be anywhere. However, the art chases you! The pictures all move, seeking nice warm avatars to snuggle up against. If you stand still for too long you can be trapped, buried in art (well, until you teleport).

It's one ugly building (in my opinion, I just hate this style of building IRL too), but it feels loved and lived in, in a way that really surprised me.
Teen Gridders don't have many options as far as programs go. They don't have the money to invest in Maya. Their economy is ruled by very few who earn as much as 40-50 USD per day. They do know how to manipulate prims, though, and that is why sculpties make them mad as hell.

In the picture above, Jay Clostermann is showing Machinima Guru a picture of the protest sign (since I can't teleport), made by Ryou Debs, that is currently on display in Andretti. Instead of carefully building something through primwork, there will be people using objects made by others. They fear that primming will be abandoned for this new art and their little spending money will dwindle, along with the creativity of the residents.

What do YOU think about sculpties? Do you think they will affect your prim business in the long run?

Read on to find out what the sign says ...

"What happens when you put restrictions on things? People are forced to come up with a creative response. By putting out sculpted prims, it takes away that motive to create new and innovative things. To tap into that part we humans are beginning to forget. Now, I'm out of a damned job as a builder. So-long SL, for you will see less and less of my work.

Unfortunately, this is the same for so many people. So please do not forget who has gotten SL this far. Do not forget the true builders of Second Life. Do not forget the cramped fingers and headaches they've suffered to bring some originality to SL. You will be outdone by fools who run Google searches and import other peoples work, and simpletons who really don't understand the creativity it takes to do what you have done. They create content for essentially peanuts. Their lindens cost the same as ours, but they can purchase three times the amount of items. Some innovative teens are working to change that, though.

Digital Refinery, the brainchild of Reallife Orca, is a teen-run content company with some of the finest content creators on the grid. They realized that Main Grid content companies had clients that weren't able to target their main market. Designers such as Ryan Dayton, Nikolai Althouse, and Brooke Barmy will be working with clients to show off their work.

Now that it's summer, concurrency will more than double, to a whopping 500 residents on at a time. Hopefully this will call attention to the Teen Grid and bring in more residents. If you are a Main Grid content company interested in putting your work on TG, please contact them. It's nice to see those appearing in native sites and stores as well, rather than just being confined to sites that are rooted in the physical world.

Elika Tiramisu is lauded throughout the SL fashion world for her realistic, ambitious hairstyles, accessories, shoes and clothing; rarely, however, is the quality of her actual establishment remarked upon. I spent too much there today, and Tiramisu's premises made it far, far too easy for me to do.
My favorite thing about her store is what greets you immediately upon entry: a sign which hands out a notecard that lists all the names of the styles and which section they can be found in, and not only a clear map of the area, but one which also features teleportation spots for each of the sections. As such, the store is laid out logically and in a fashion that allows both focused shopping and browsing.

Too many large stores have no such guide, leaving you to wander around from section to section, as things rez, hoping to stumble on to the class of merchandise that you are looking for, often wandering right past the as-yet-unrezzed panels. Sure they're usually signed, but the individual signs may take some time to rez, and have this awkward tendency (like London street signage) to be positioned just about any place other than where you are hoping to see them.

In addition, all the displays in the store are elegant, clear, and easy to understand, and the fittings show a close attention to detail. Possibly the only way the look of the store is let down slightly is in the gaps left between items, particularly in the clothing area. Perhaps they could be filled with some sort of background image that supports the item fixtures without distracting from them.

If you are about to get started in a business in SL, or you are looking to expand your establishment, you would do well to check out this place first, and get a few building and design ideas before you lay that first prim.

These days I'm out of the education loop at the NCI, but I really wanted to see how the classes are being handled, and I have an especial affinity for the Basic Building class.

With that in mind, I looked up a class that was on at a convenient time, and quietly slipped in to see how Kerhop Seattle handled his Basic Building class at NCI South yesterday.

When I checked this class in the Community Events list, the first thing I noticed was the class length. Having taught the material myself, I had a pretty good handle on how long it takes to cover, being about 90 minutes. The class was slated that for that length and I felt it boded fairly well. Additionally, a small class size was promised; I'm not sure what the size limit was, but the class remained at about six avatars throughout.

The session started five minutes after the stated time to allow stragglers to come in without disrupting the rest of the students (a bit of a tradition of NCI classes). The teacher, Kerhop Seattle, is a congenial fellow, well-written and well-spoken; he welcomed everyone and attempted to put them at ease as they waited. When things began, Seattle explained that the presentation would be broken up into three parts of thirty minutes each: lecture, lab, and Q&A. I had the feeling then that this was going to be quite a different basic building class to those I had attended previously and taught previously.

Lecture: 30 minutes of demonstration.
Seattle typed his way manually through the material for the entire class - much as I used to do; it may have been a strain on him to do so, rather than having pre-prepared text, but the side-effect was a good pace for the class to proceed at, while allowing students to ask questions. Also, he sounded comfortable typing, and didn't get that awful textbook-y stilted flavor to his lecturing (as I so often did). He utilized both typed explanations and visuals throughout.

Lab: 30 minutes of personalised building instruction.
Having been to classes where absolutely everything is explained in painful detail, as well as to those where things are almost totally skimmed over, I was pleasantly surprised to find that (though I wondered whether I'd have been able to follow all the instructions as a new resident), with a couple of exceptions, the students were able to carry out all the tasks required of them; when those exceptions arose, Seattle led individuals gently through the section concerning them.

Q&A: 30 minutes of discussion.
During this section, Seattle covered some questions raised earlier in the piece, then moved onto more generalised building topics: prim limits, land information, vehicular prim limits for scripting, and general tips and advice.

Overall, I was impressed with the class. Seattle is a knowledgable chap and is sensitive to his student's needs, and this was reflected in yesterday's session. I was interested that Seattle refrained from covering the whole of the "Edit" panel, preferring to discuss only the most essential parts of the building process; some teachers do prefer to cover the whole panel, but I feel this makes for a rushed class - lord knows, I used to cover it in fair detail and it seemed the dreariest part of the lesson. Troublemakers and disruptors during the class were dealt with swiftly, and effectively.

I think an excellent addition to the class would be a summary sheet that also covers some extensions to what is taught: for example, covering the keystrokes that cause stretching and rotation tools to appear, instead of relying only on the "Edit" panel. Essentially, something to bridge the potential gap between basic and intermediate classes, particularly for those people who take classes at different institutions.

As for absorption of the material for new residents, while nobody showed especial difficulties, being a free class there is always the opportunity to return and sit in on the material as many times as required. All in all, highly recommended.
