He writes with honesty and compassion, which is always refreshing when it comes to SL. So, in the deluge of new books coming out on SL, I'm glad he's taken the time to write one of his own. It's called The Entrepreneur's Guide to Second Life: Making Money in the Metaverse. It's geared toward analyzing businesses that work in SL, and how you can create a business that will become successful.

In the referring article, Daniel says that while it's true he's not an SL entrepreneur, he does qualify to some degree in being an authority on his subject. In fact, I'd argue that by not being an entrepreneur himself, he brings a much-needed perspective to the subject. And in seven months, too; that's pretty damned quick. Go check this book out here, and its related blog here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Straylight -- A Kingdom of Magical Meadows

Filed under: Graphic Design, Exploration, Great Builds, Arts and Culture

Straylight sim is not just a forest full of magical flowers and beautifully modeled sculptie trees. The creator, Kriss Lehmann, is planning further developments and has opened a flickr group for those who love the experience he designed.

The content here has a great level of detail, from the ground textures, to the trees, waterfalls and scripted creatures/plants. It can only be unique and visionary.

I have only words of praise for DanCoyote Antonelli's sim-wide installation on Arts and Letters opening today at 6 pm SLT. Second Life is full of beautiful and interesting art exhibits, but DanCoyote (DC Spensley in real life) has taken his insights into the virtual space to a ground-breaking level.

Continue reading on for a sneak peak before the opening and some tips for a better experience!

1. The big picture view: Space as the volume of a cube, organized in a layered fashion.

The installation space is constructed to immerse the avatar in an a new environment, free of the geographical constrains that we as people controlling out characters are trained to recognize. I highly encourage you to set your client to the settings indicated at starting point. Failure to do so will heavily impact your experience.

2. Layers, Organization, and Navigation

Each layer is marked by semi-transparent walkways along which avatars can walk/fly and interact with artwork. Every level is a panoramic fine arts painting. To help you navigate between exhibits, there is a scripted tour in the shape of a red-cube. Click on it and select a node to begin your exploration. Don't be afraid to walk and fly around!

Some highlights in our gallery:
The golden installation is created with a complex pattern of interaction based on who is approaching and the kind of actions undertaken nearby.
Modeled after Don Quixote, this sculpture is DanCoyote Antonelli's rendition, titled "Exploding Starax". The lines are beautifully described as brush strokes and as soon as you approach it, the statue (as the name suggests) explodes in various pieces.

3. Subtle Points

The art installation here is unique and captures many deeper concepts. If you wish to understand more, I urge you to check out the novel information kiosks.
Left in the image: the closed conformation you will see on each layer. As soon as you approach, it will expand into a full-size board with information and description (right), to help you learn about the artwork.

Enjoy!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Anthropology and SL: Two Great Tastes, etc.

Filed under: Graphic Design, Stories, Mixed Reality
I'm excited to read Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human by Tom Boellstorff, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California at Irvine, perhaps better known as his SL avatar Tom Bukowski.

One mode of thought has it that humans stopped evolving once they began to manipulate their environment to make their lives easier; there's nothing like the threat of extinction to force evolution. However, while our physical evolution might have slowed or even halted, our social evolution continues, as witness the rise of the online social networking phenomenon exemplified by MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and of course SL.

If I hadn't been such a poor student, I'd have gone into anthropology myself, so I'm eager to read Mr. Boellstorff's upcoming book, in which he relates his experiences being in-world for over two and a half years.

(Via chronicle.com)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Scripting Recipes for Second Life

Of all SL activities, scripting is the most arcane art. I once took a Basics in Programming course just out of curiosity and came away with an abiding fear of the numbers 1 and 0. So when I hear about a book like Scripting Recipes for Second Life by Jeff Heaton, I think two things: 'Cool, this will help residents create even more fun things for me to play with', and 'aaiiieeeeeeeeeeeee'. The build is impressive in its artistic features although it's fully enclosed and a bit confusing to navigate its labyrinth of tunnels and corridors. You can also find two official Transformers movie avatars, distributed for free, under the statue of frozen Megatron.

For those who grew up loving the transformers, the charm of these legendary characters is their awesome ability to change appearances between robots and ordinary cars/vehicles/mechanical things. In fact, I'd dare say that the essence of transformers is that they ... transform! And this is where Liam's avatars fall short.Although the avatar builds themselves display a high degree of detail and depth in robot mode, they only have robot mode. And this type of content is symptomatic with real-world ventures into Second Life.

However, where the official site fails to provide this, there are quite a few residents who have successfully created fully scripted transformers. Some fans were hanging around the other day when I visited and I was passed on a free and full-mod version of Starscream. More images of Liam's beautiful work and my shiny new, transforming Starscream avie can be found here.

Thanks to Calum Clifton for the heads-up!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rewiring Your Emotional Future

Filed under: Graphic Design, Odds and Ends
I was sent a copy of the new book "Virtual Worlds: Rewiring Your Emotional Future", co-written by Jack Myers of Jack Myers Media Business Report, and mediavillage.com; and Jerry Weinstein, author of numerous online publications, including Noam Chomsky: A Life of Dissent. I found the book to be an interesting primer for anyone interested in SL, coming to it from the outside. Mr. Myers makes a case for the necessity of coming up to speed with the concept of virtual worlds, positing their emergence as merely the next step in the evolution of mankind's social environment, rather than simply a flash-in-the-pan fad for now.

Also, Mr. Myers invites everyone to participate in the ongoing storyline of reader-generated fiction CyberParadiseSociety.com, the first chapter of which is introduced in the back of the book. Never will you find a more wretched hive of -- I'm sorry, a more imaginative and giving assembly of artists. Patou Dumont is one such artist, having created a comic using SL as his medium for the title "Le Rendez-vous". On Wednesday I had the chance to visit the completed build, pictured above, and get a sneak preview of their forthcoming exhibitions.

These exhibitions are due to open on 1st July and are well worth a visit if you're interested in art and/or art in Second Life. There are three exhibitions in total - more pictures and some description below the fold...

The Fine Art exhibition has a very traditional pictures on the wall, although the pictures are rather contemporary as you might expect from art students. This is a teaser of the start of the exhibition.

Next up we have the Graphic Arts and Design exhibition. This is, at first look similar, except it tends to be photographic from what I saw. A closer look... and reading the signs like the one under this photo of some of the exhibitors suggests there's something else going on, and, indeed, there is. If you touch the exhibits they change, size, shape, position and the artwork on display. It's quite fascinating to play with, and the reason for this photo... these are the only pictures that don't change - they take you to the student's portfolio instead.

Last, but by no means least we have an exhibition that could only happen in SL. The Contemporary Creative Practice exhibition contains a mixture of artistic styles, in that it could be anywhere. However, the art chases you! The pictures all move, seeking nice warm avatars to snuggle up against. If you stand still for too long you can be trapped, buried in art (well, until you teleport).

It's one ugly building (in my opinion, I just hate this style of building IRL too), but it feels loved and lived in, in a way that really surprised me. The art inside makes it come alive in more ways than one! Stick the July 1st in your diary and come over to see it.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Linden Lab announces sculpted prim winners

Filed under: Graphic Design, News, Events, Linden Lab

Linden Lab has announced the winners of their sculpted prim exhibition. It's totally worth seeing the invention and imagination on display.

You can see images of just the winners here, on Linden Lab's announcement, or check our huge gallery below for images of many of the entries.

%Gallery-3705%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Self portraits - aesthetics of the inner world

Filed under: Graphic Design, Entertainment, Educational, Events, Stories, Exploration
Jean Fouquet's self-portrait (c. 1450), a small picture created in gold on black enamel, is seen as "the earliest clearly identified self-portrait that is a separate painting, not an incidental part of a larger work." It's what is known as the "separate or natural" self-portrait, as opposed to insertions of the self in groups, or using a personal likeness to represent another person, often historical in nature.

The science of the self-portrait has changed dramatically since then; from paintings to photo-portraiture. In Second Life, another extension has been added; the tools used to create photographs in our Second Lives are a part of the set we use for every day Second Living. Changing camera angles, altering the lighting and quickly snapping shots with the press of a button are familiar activities to many of us; many of us spend time looking at ourselves, examining and changing outfits and body parts to create a look that more precisely reflects how we feel. Despite this, few of us would grant that our efforts are especially aesthetically pleasing, technically impressive, or precise and accurate in reflecting our inner lives.

The art of the self-portrait has increased in complexity. There are, today, more reasons to produce self-portraits, and more options to take in production of the artwork.

The curator of the Gallery Library on Info Island, Bucky Barkley, chose the self-portraits represented in the current exhibition based on the strength and boldness of the images and the women who created them: DeeDee Deepdene, Felony Fabre, Lilith Lunardi, and Shoshana Epsilon. Impressed by the range displayed by these artists, and their technical prowess, he was keen to bring their portraits together in the one exhibition.

There is little further to be said about the exhibition that is not already covered by the promotional material that you can pick up for yourself on location, or that does would not be better conveyed by seeing the portraits themselves. Suffice it to say, it's an excellent display of how these women see themselves, and how they want to be seen by the other residents of Second Life.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Second Life For Dummies

SL's own Intellagirl Tully (along with her partner Mark Bell) is hard at work on 'Second Life for Dummies', the latest in the 'For Dummies' canon of publications. Chafe at the appellation if you must, but these books are as popular as they've ever been -- apparently people don't mind being called 'dummies', as long as they're learning something. That's hard to argue against, so we'll let it lie. The book is due in September.

The article mentions that Intellagirl is asking residents for their recommendations on the 10 best places in SL. Before you run out and spend $3000 USD on a copy of Maya (or $7000 USD for the Maya Unlimited package), or worse steal a copy - you may want to consider a few things.

First, if you aren't already familiar with Maya, actually having it isn't going to make you any more able to create sculptable prims than not having it. We're not talking easy here. If you're going to scale the learning curve anyway, though, there are better ways to learn it than Maya.

What the hell is a sculpt texture?

It's a three dimensional displacement map that is applied to a sphere. Basically the sphere is made of lots of little triangles. The point where those triangles touch at the corners is called a vertex. A sculpt texture has the X, Y and Z position of each vertex laid out in a flat sheet, relative to the center of the sphere. That tells it where every vertex goes and will form the final shape.

This is not something you work out on paper, this is where you make a shape with a modeling tool and then use it, or other tools the make that sculpt texture for you. Lots of those tools aren't really intended to do this, so there's bonus learning involved, and there are all sorts of non-obvious things you can't do if you want it to work at the end. If you want to charge around trying to learn Maya off the top of your noggin to get sculpties to work, don't expect to succeed. Learn Maya first, then learn to do sculpties with it; or use some other tool.

Rokuro Rocks!

First up, there's Rokuro. It's fast, it's free and it's designed specifically for creating SL sculpties. Granted, it only handles radially symmetric shapes, but if you want a champagne flute or a wine-bottle, or a table-leg, Rokuro will do it for you in under a minutes, and take less than that to download. Get Rokuro here. If you're new to sculpties, start with Rokuro.

Wings3d

Wings3d is a cross-platform subdivision modeler that handles simple texturing. If you've never pushed a vertex or face around in a modeler, wings3d is the modeler for you. It's also free (available here, for free), but like just about everything (other than Rokuru) it just wasn't designed for sculpt textures, so there's some finicky things you need to pay attention to. The export plugin and requirements are all listed here.

Pov-ray

Pov-ray is free, but is only going to be useful to you to make sculpt textures if you already know how to drive it. If you do, Johanna Hyacinth completes the puzzle for you here, and you can grab Pov-Ray here - though trust me, if you're considering using Pov-ray for this, it's because you already have it.

Blender

Blender's not all-singing and all-dancing, but it certainly sings and dances right up there with a lot of very expensive tools. You can run it on nearly anything and it's free. Two tutorials exist here, and here for generating sculpt textures without a special exporter or script. You can get Blender itself from here. You can also use it for creating complex animations if you get tired of using it to create sculpt textures.

Yes, folks, "sculpties" will soon arrive on the preview grid. Torley Linden made a blog entry on the official Linden blog regarding this momentous occasion. SLI reader Tao Takashi was able to get some information out of Robin and Joe Linden, with the announcement that sculpties will be added to a beta client next week. I guess we'll have to wait just a bit longer to taste the forbidden fruit. *sigh*

What will sculptable prims mean for us? Watch this machinima and see for yourself. Imagine being able to bypass the 31 prim limit of a vehicle because you molded the shape. Imagine lower prim avatars and furniture. Hell, just imagine, in general! This is truly the biggest news that has come out of Second Life since flexi-prims!

The ARG ended on a positive note, with qDot explaining the reasoning behind Cubesque and CubeOverload. For those curious, Funk Schnook appears to be the "winner" for finding that old blog entry. What was your opinion of the mystery?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Prim Perfect Magazine

SL's newest magazine, Prim Perfect, revolves around building and managing your SL home, apartment, skybox, what have you. With just a few minutes left until 9:46am PDT/SLT, it seems as if the puzzle has been solved!

CubeOverload was updated with another jumbled song, this time, to the tune of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." According to Elle Pollack, qDot made a post on Twitter about being in Georgia for GDX.
Second Life Insider reader Funk Schnook sent me an in-world tip regarding Qarl's blog. As previously discovered by Moriash Moreau, the URL corners changed to qarners and then to qarl on Cubesque. Now it appears as if Qarl Linden is the person behind the event which we have not determined the nature of yet.

We now have solid theories, thanks to Funk. On September 15th, 2006 at 4:46pm, Qarl blogged about merging geometry in Maya. This would make seams between two parts smooth. This entry is not visible on his blog. The entry DID end up being cached in his RSS feed, which allowed pictures to be taken of this entry. Click here and here to see the step by step instructions he gave.

With no recent updates to the CubeOverload site, and the Cubesque site rapidly filling with blocks, only time will answer our burning question.
Avatar Expression is a coffee table book of photographs highlighting various beautiful avatars that Forseti Svarog has come across in-world.
Haver Cole and Saeya Nyanda are the co-creators of the brand-new magazine PWNED. I got them together to talk about it a little bit, and ended up biting off more than I could chew, as you will see. It's okay, though: it was yummy like nougat, with an interesting texture, and it's here that my metaphor breaks down. To begin the interview, I asked how the two of them came up with the idea for PWNED.

Saeya Nyanda: Well ... We were really effing bored one day and spent maybe that day and the next two days talking about how we wanted to do something but didn't know what ... and we thought of all kinds of stuff ... Like, Haver what were some of them?

Haver Cole: Like Gorean fairy princesses and furry tiny lesbians.

Saeya: We decided we should have a secret life where we're Gor slaves or something more interesting than standing around Haver's workspace.

Like 'Tracey Takes On'.

Haver: Exactly.Saeya: And we didn't understand a lot of the genres we were wanting to check out, like pony girls ... what's up with them? I know they look cool but I have no idea what it's about.

Haver: Or didn't even know how to define like Neko. I have generally no clue about Neko; where did it come from? What's the verbage?

Saeya: We were asking ourselves how we get involved in *any* new subculture on SL, really.

Haver: And not do the lame stuff, but the really cool new interesting well done stuff.

Saeya: And then the mag idea popped up, like wouldn't it be great if we could pick up some cool, non-cheesy definite guide on one specific culture on SL.

Haver: AND we get to do the stuff!

Saeya: Yes, adventures in weird Haver and Saeya land.

So the name of the mag is basically you guys saying 'We've got this culture completely covered'.

Haver: Yerpo.

Saeya: Yep, pretty much. And as the mag progresses, it will get more comprehensive and in-depth.

Haver: So we decided on the broad topic of alts cause it was something everyone does, AND that it seemed weird that people who have second lives need third [ones]. Then I had gotten the girl with the 34 alts interview.

How did that come about?

Haver: She is actually someone fairly well known, and we have friends in common.

But the article doesn't give names?

Haver: No, although she would if TOS was different. She dosen't hide herself, and if you read it carefully there are hints. Saeya and I have 49,856,049,856 Skype calls about ideas. And we found Catero and Iris ...

Saeya: Yes, who are SUCH gems!

Haver: And just added content.

Iris is so great!

Haver: Agreed. They pwn!

Saeya: We wanted writing and illustrations that were unapologetic. A mag that caters to people with opinions. And so we want, and so far it has, the content to fall in line with that.

Unapologetic; we need more of that.

Haver: We also structured the ad content very uniquely to try and keep that in mind.

Saeya: Yeah and it falls in line with the vision of the mag without a million sponsors ... we can HAVE an opinion because they don't pwn us. Just one does, for one issue ... what's great is, the sponsors that are drawn to us generally don't want us to bend over and grab our ankles for them.

Haver: We work with them as a team to provide the best experience possible for ALL of us. They get more, we get more, we both win.

Are you two planning on a steady and predictable publishing regimen?

Haver: Haha!

Saeya grins

Haver: It involves spankings.

What doesn't?

Saeya: We're hard workers and we LOVE it ... so, I think, yes.

Haver: Yeah, we show up. It's what we do. We show up, do our work, and love it.

Saeya: Pwn it.

Haver: Generally you have to STOP us working. We needed more time to really lay out the direction of the mag, and the voice, but now that it's more settled, style-wise, we get to kick ass and take names.

Saeya: Style-wise we have a sturdy spring board to jump from now.

Haver: I want people to be doing this stuff with us, feeding us what they love so we can get it out there for everyone to enjoy. We like weird shit.

Saeya: We really adore feedback and REALLY wanna know what people are curious about on SL. Why I am personally so stoked on this mag and working with Haver is [that] we're both WORKERS and it's harder for shit to get freaky and dramatic when you've got your nose to the grindstone.

This is your first business venture together?

Saeya: Mmhm, and definitely not the last.

Haver: Yes, we work insanely well together, and really I have enjoyed this more than any project in SL.

Saeya: Me too, it's so interesting to me when you have moments in RL or SL, where things align and people align and suddenly you're like, "Wow, I'm so in my effing element ... " and you look around and so is everyone you're working with. And you get to do what you love and then watch it all unfold around you.

Haver: For me its also in a small way a link to my RL. My family is in publishing in RL, and it's 3rd gen. And I have never been interested in it as a job. But then I do something in this place in this way that creates a spark.

Saeya: And my background, prior to getting into the field I am in now was design and advertising.

Sometimes we spend a lot of time just spinning our wheels, then suddenly one day the planets align to show you something truly remarkable.

Saeya: Exactly, like Haver's ass.

Haver: (simultaneously) Like my hiney.

Haver: OMGOMGWEIRD!

Wow, you two ARE twins!

Saeya: Hahaha!

Haver: The preview page for next month is my hiney.

Saeya: Yes, the last page of the mag.

Haver: And hopefully will be every month.

Saeya: We're into sharing. :D And the world should so get to see her ass as much as possible.

I think you just sold a million copies.

Haver snickers

Speaking of which, what is the pricing?

Haver: It's free.

That's so crazy it JUST MIGHT WORK.

Haver: HAHAHA I KNOW!

Saeya: It will work. Everyone likes free shit. And we gotta be good to the newblets. They are the next generation.

Can you give me the related website links?

Haver: www.pwndzine.blogspot.com

Who's on your staff?

Haver: Saeya and I share the head cheese position.

Saeya: Well on the design end, we have me, Shai Delacroix on this issue and Novi Gadsby.

Haver: For content we have me, Cater Revolution, Iris Ophelia, and DayDreamer Langway, and Duran Dancer.

Saeya: And Photography is Haver, Dakota Buck, and I.

Haver: His writing was so funny we added him to the staff after we read his article.

Saeya: It's a small but all-star staff, in our minds.

Haver: Super all-star. And next month we add Pushbutton Slotnik as our kickassing proofer.

Saeya: And we have Colleen Desmoulins representing the PR area with Haver.

Haver: Yeah she is killing it. All our friends have really pitched in to help and be supportive, and been ok with us being mad crazy work-starved fiends.

Saeya: Menno Ophelia and Killian Klein also will be contributing.

Haver: We rock the Ophelias!

Saeya: As fluffers, sexy builders, and all around staff day savers.

After that point, it got completely silly, so I've spared you all the redonkulousness. Haver and Saeya add that residents can find the mag at Imogen as well as ETD isle, Celestial, Canimal's, Last Call, and Amicitia.
