Roslin Petion, of Tete a Pied, is hosting a special group-only event tonight, October 30th, at 7pm PDT/SLT. If you're a reader of the Second Style blog, you'll have noticed that Grazia Horwitz has been flaunting her custom skin from Tete for the last few days!

Now you can have your very own custom skin from Tete. Have you ever liked the eyes, cheeks, and lips on different skins? Tonight only, if you're wearing your group tag, you can mix and match components, or add freckles and beauty marks, for the low price of 1200L per skin.

On another awesome note, TaP marked down some of their skins for Halloween.
When I first stumbled onto this furniture, I couldn't believe how realistic it looked. It comes in 13 "flavors" - Apple, Lettuce, Marshmallow, Blueberry, Grape, Wine, Cherry, Licorice, Chocolate, Robotfood, Nougat, CottonCandy, and Skyberry - that correspond to their color.
Chopsaw, named after the mainland sim it's located at, is the collaboration of sculptie master, Aminom Marvin, and skin goddess, Gala Phoenix. Their current offering, modular furniture, has three components to it - a 3-prim couch for L$500, a 3-prim loveseat for L$400, and a two-prim armchair for L$250. All items are no mod/no copy/transfer.

One of the features that makes this furniture unique is that you can change the sit pose for each individual seat. The main feature that sets it apart from the rest, though, is the ability to configure your furniture with a couple of mouse clicks. The armchair becomes an ottoman, the couch sprouts a corner piece that lets you put another couch or loveseat next to it. The possibilities are almost endless!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Armani screws up

Filed under: Clothing, Shopping, Stories, Business, Mixed Reality

Not irreversably. Not irredeemably, certainly. However, their first step seems to have been a stumble. Make a mental list of the things they could get wrong in establishing a Second Life presence. It appears that Armani have managed to check-off most of the high-points there. And it's a damn shame, because people expected better. Hallmark of quality and all that, right? That tallies up to another black mark.

Iris Ophelia takes a critical look at Armani's efforts, and both that and the comments that follow are worth the read, particularly the comment from Tenshi Vielle.

Second Style's Grazia Horwitz also weighs in on the matter, among others.

If this was Wal-Mart, or Joe's Hamster Hut, or even Seven-Eleven, I don't think that there would be such a problem. This is however, Armani, and the expectations of people insofar as the brand reputation just have not been met. It's not classy, or innovative. It's basically pedestrian, and fails to meet basic cost versus quality expectations.

It's not wretched. It's not awful. It's not bad. It's merely mediocre, demonstrating a lack of imagination, a lack of flair, and a lack of willingness to make the most of the tools.

That's not the image we associate with Armani - yet, there it is, for the world to see. It doesn't appear to have been a matter of cost, so much as a shortage of excellence.

I hope Armani will reevaluate their approach and attempt to improve. Few will hold it against them if they do.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

KMADD sim offers menswear from many designers in one location

Filed under: Shopping, Events, Arts and Culture

Kirk Claymore and Maddox Dupont, of KMADD ENTERPRISES, are providing a much needed service for men in Second Life. Tonight, at 7:30 pm PDT, they are opening their new sim, Kmadd Enterprise, to the public. In the sim, you can find men's shapes, skins, and clothing from over 35 designers in one convenient spot! Previously, guys had to travel all over the grid to get their shopping done.

In addition to housing menswear, there will be a Center for the Arts, where SL artists can showcase their work. If you can't get enough of a fix tonight, they will be holding a fashion show tomorrow, October 14th, at 5pm PDT. I encourage the ladies to bring a few male friends, or alts, along, and I hope to see everyone there!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Depo to run fashion show with no size 0 models

While browsing SL Exchange for sculpties, I came across a really cool set of animals made by Timmi Allen. The appeal for me, of course, is that there were holstein cows among them! When I arrived to his shop in Neuland, I was surprised to find very realistic statues. They're even animated so that their mouths open and their tails wag!

I'm really excited to see what residents have done so far with sculpties. In conjunction with regular prims, they allow a whole new level of customization. Have you made anything you'd like to show off? They all own groups on one of the fastest growing services ever to hit SL. I cannot stress enough how this device will shape our virtual future.

MSo Lambert, of Synthetik, sought to fix a serious issue that affects all of us - the 25 group limit. Before Subscribe-o-Matic, residents had to choose which groups to leave on a weekly basis in order to make room for more important groups. Now they can just click to subscribe and go on with their business.

For business owners, this means so much more. They are able to see who their subscribers are, when they signed up, what location they signed up at, manage their messages, send notecards, items, and pictures, or just make a simple announcement. In just two short months, the subscriber base has grown to over 19,000!

MSo is continually making improvements upon the service. Some of the features in the works are HUDs that will let you manage your subscribed groups and messages, raising the subscriber limits for the price ranges, integration with third party products and vendors for group discounts and sales, and statistics for the group owners!
What's cute, cuddly, and politically incorrect in every way? Tiny Tardimals! Kyro Kilian, the proprietor of Tardimals HQ, began creating these avatars as an alternative to the more traditional, healthier looking tinies. The initial response to them has been so overwhelming that he's even had to hire sales reps!

Kyro is constantly adding new Tardimals to the lineup, with his latest being a squirrel. He also sells accessories, such as bandanas, glasses, and costumes to wear with your avatar. As soon as they look up at you with their bug eyes and their tongue hanging out, you're hooked. You can find his store in Collins.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Tete a Pied's new Vivant line makes me drool

Update: Roslin informed me that there are 6 tones, not 5. I missed the blush tone. Sorry, Roslin!

Compared to some of the oldbie skin makers, Roslin Petion and CJ Carnot might be considered new to the scene. However, they've already retired several versions of their skin line! The newest version of their skins, Vivant, is their best one yet. It comes in <del>5</del> 6 skin tones, almond, cream, blush, buff, bronze, and chestnut, and started with 16 different makeup sets, with 3 options in each set.

While I love the amount of makeup options that I now have, what really sold me were the details. You see, I have a problem with my nose. The flaps seem to stick out strangely on most skins. These skins have some of the most incredible nose shading that I've ever seen! In addition, they feature customizable eyebrow shades and *ahem* pubic region.

My poor L balance wishes it ended with the initial 16, but Roslin and CJ had different plans. They've been releasing a new makeup set once a week ever since their new line debuted in September. Perhaps what astonishes me most, though, is that individual skins only cost 500L, while the 3 pack comes in at a very affordable 1200L. Skins of this quality from other retailers might cost thousands more per pack. There's even a free newbie skin for those under 30 days old!

Visit the Nouveau sim today to try on skin demos, or view more after the break ...

Not only has she attracted funding from venture capitalists Gladwyne Partners, she's also launched, and withdrawn, her 10 LINDEN range, but will be relaunching it.

This is a drama that seems to be playing out on the SL Exchange forums, which are, I must admit, a level of dedication and time I don't normally have in the efforts to bring you news.

To try and sum up however, Anshe believes that selling goods for L$10 will invigorate the SL economy and be good news for everyone. She is a stockholder on SLEx and her goods appeared in their own special category - possibly at Apotheus' suggestion, possibly at Anshe's, but to the distress of many. The fact that, as a stockholder she has edit and delete rights to forum postings is also raising concerns.

I have to admit I've held off on this story because I wondered if she'd ever actually do it - it sounded like an advertising ploy to me. Why? Well, I have to wonder as to the success of this ploy if it actually runs. Aiming for the "Walmart market" in Second Life might work - but the divide between being in the freebie marketplace and being wiling to spend a few hundred lindens for high quality work is a very small step to my mind. Even if you're not a premium member, hit your credit card for US$20 on Lindex and you've suddenly got a few thousand L$ in your pocket (about L$5,500). Is there really a market place for low quality, low price items? Will Anshe's "international workforce" manage to produce enough items of high enough quality to attract people to buy her stuff?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

MetaHUD Explores New Take on Social Bookmarking in Second Life

Under the motto of "social engine for Second Life", Robbie Kiama has recently launched a new and interesting product - MetaHUD. This new gadget is a neat combination between a Digg/StumbleUpon network for SL and an in-world, easy-to-search marketplace. The interface is very friendly and reminds users of a regular web browser. The buttons are nicely designed, with graphics that cut across language barriers. You can access the Digg/StumbleUpon feature under the Travel tab at the top and the marketplace under Items.

I typically use the gadget to tag favorite places as I encounter them, but MetaHUD also has a system for people to buy items (without needing to teleport to a store). Simply search under "Items" for things you wish to buy or do the search "/8 meta mart" and grab the partner kit to learn about advertising here.

Much like SLExchange<del></del>, this MetaHUD does charge a percentage/commission of sales. The other similar service is OnRez, which has free listings for shop owners. It features both in-world and on the web purchasing options. (Thanks for that clarification, Forseti).

MetaHUD's search method seems to be more more efficient than the classifieds and it does allow sellers to input a picture and tags for specific objects (much like SL browser). If you're a fan of digg or del.icio.us, you'll definitely love this.
It's been a while since we did any Japanese shopping. Well, it's that time again! The intricate, the cute, the detailed, the visually appealing and the cheap. I decided to start in Ginza, and wound up as far away as Vari.

While touring Ginza, I thought I'd take a look at Cecile's and I ran into a show by Cecile Yoshikawa. Yoshikawa (pictured here, in the center) runs the Second Life end of the Cecile catalog retailer, and the suit and dresses you see in the gallery image are available for free. Those are some nice suits, boys. Go get them.

Nearby is Emily Freund's K@E, a skin and shape store for child avatars, though they also stock eyes (and some lovely ones at that), kitty-hats (yay! Kitty hats!), shoes, prim hair, some pretty kimonos, and - for no particular reason that I can determine - Rolex watches and ... err a black Les Paul Gibson guitar and a trombone, both of which are multifunction weapons.

I'm not sure what these three products have to do with the rest of the kid-oriented goodies, but the guitar is a very nice piece of work. K@E skins come in three ethnic varieties, and shapes are available in 6, 9, 12 and 15 year olds. Only one set of male skin, shape and hair is available at present.

There are several freebies on the counter, including two tiny avatars.

ElleAir Plasma, a Japanese designer, has a fascinatingly eclectic mix of things. From a car that Penelope Pitstop would be proud of, through fairy clothes, maid outfits, nurses uniforms (and assorted patient props and smocks) Yukata, Kimono and more. Plasma-san is a skilled designer with visual flair, and like most Japanese creators, very reasonably priced! Yum! Go see for yourself!

So what makes this HUD gadget special enough to demand attention, you ask? Well, it indexes some 1.4 million products and averages 2000 searches per day.

But this isn't about numbers ... I'm excited about several features that surpass the searching capabilities available in the SL client. For one - you can search based on keywords and in your results you get the location and relevant object/keyword image (instead of the picture of a storefront). This helps narrow your search at-a-glance, without wasting time teleporting to a tens of sites to find something close to what you have in mind. It even sports an "impulse buying" option through the "Public" search feature. If you have that box checked, your HUD will react to searches other people make using the browser. If you like what you're hearing, go get your own here.

If you're a business owner and wish to update your object description, simply change the object description and the Browser will automatically update in a week's time. Felix is also working on creating tags for those who wish to have their objects stay un-indexed by his gadget. For the techies reading this, continue on to hear about how the browser works, pitfalls, etc.

Since I am not a tech person, here are a few snippets of from the conversation I had with Felix about SL Browser. Yes, he actually talks in bullet points! [Note: this exchange has been edited to correct spelling errors and re-order some comments to match the intended sequence of responses]

What do you think are the differences between SL Browser and the Electric Sheep implementation of the ad network, besides this being a resident-created product? :)
Felix Wakmann: Differences:
1) images
2) searches contents of objects
3) in-world user interface
4) more care with security issues

So are you still currently indexing? And can owners of those objects edit their listing (if not now, at some point)?
Felix Wakmann: We scan the entire grid every week. So, if you want better info, just edit your objects in-world, to add more descriptions.

What are some of the issues you are currently aware of?
Felix Wakmann: The issues:
1) Our robots only list things that they can *see*. we move the robot around, but.. its hard for them to navigate (requires Artificial Intelligence, which they don't have). We are working on an easy way for shop owners to "tag" the spots that the robot should visit and also, to block the robot from visiting ... all very easy to do.
2) We currently don't do very well with "vendors"... with many products in them. We have a solution for that too, but it's not done yet. Most of the big, high-quality stores avoid them, at least.
3) We don't have a great way to order the results based on how good they are, but... we are working on that too
This is all "research and development" in action, but you can't answer some questions until you have the experience from developing the first step.

How would you define "good"?
Felix Wakmann: Google basically defined the approach, saying "good = popular". We are working on defining an analogy for SL, based on traffic and some other ideas.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Let's Go Shopping - Men's Edition 4 - Suits you, sir.

If you missed last week's sampling of menswear and fashions, you can find it here.

Two big ones today! This week, we're looking at Blaze Fine Fashions, and Magellan House - both recommended by a number of SLI readers. We're still looking for places to review, so if you have a favorite men's store which has clothing, accessories, shoes, skins, hair, gadgets, or anything else you can think of, let us know. If our test audience buys something, we'll write it up the store here.

Blaze Fine Fashions - Blaze Columbia

With her concise range of menswear, Blaze Columbia has ensured that she has not substituted quality for quantity. She has produced a selection of business, smart casual and formal outfits for men, all with elegant, understated and attractive handrawn detailing. Unlike with photorealistically detailed clothing, Blaze's garments hint at folds and creases rather than fleshing them out in full, giving a streamlined look more appropriate to Second Life. Blaze's businesses suits are especially popular, with satiny welt pockets in opposition to the matt button holes and a sheen on the lapels for the jacket, and crisp creases permanently pressed into the pants.

Something I especially liked was the layering of the shirts and ties. The shirt is on the undershirt layer, the tie knot on the shirt layer, and the tie itself is a flexi-prim layered over the top. This gives the whole system a great flexibility for combinations of color within the label, and assists with compatibility with other Second Life garments.

If I were to desire any changes to Blaze's work, it would be these: extra cuff detailing on the shirt, and a slightly different effect for the crotch creases on the pants. Nonetheless, I accept that altering the cuffs might make them less compatible with other Second Life clothing, and that considering the way that pants wrap around the avatar mesh, that crotch creases can be quite difficult.

Magellan House - Apparel by Mako - Mako Magellan

Mako Magellan's clothing range has just expanded by quite a large extent, so even if you are already familiar with Mr. Magellan's work, now is an excellent time to check out his garments. The gallery contains snaps taken during the Grand Opening of his flagship store in Caledon, Victoria City. I had the privilege of hobnobbing with the man himself as the excessively polite and refined people of Caledon and surrounds, and other admirers of Mr. Magellan's designs, came together to celebrate the opening. The opening was decidedly well attended, with people coming and going throughout the period between 3pm and 5pm on 11 August, for an average of 20 people, with quite a number sticking around after the stated time.

Mr. Magellan's designs are interesting. Not necessarily historically correct (by design), but certainly with more than a nod in that direction, and with a taste of his own style in addition. From a distance, and even from his own advertising, his clothing may look a little plain, perhaps even severe; however, this misapprehension is soon cleared up from a more usual distance - in fact the clothing has been carefully textured, in some cases delicately, in others, more boldly.

With the introduction of several new pieces, we witness the development of Mr. Magellan's style, as he breaks out into more colorful and dramatic designs intended for everyday wear, as opposed to his previous dramatic "dress-up" garments. Even though the execution is not quite right, in that the stripes do not match up across seams (though, to be granted, RL clothing doesn't match designs across seams either), one of my favorite pieces is the red pinstripe double-breasted suit, a bold and glamorous choice and an excellent concept. The "Sergeant Pepper" outfit I am also very fond of, particularly the detailing on the front of the jacket, although the collar color dos not quite match that of the jacket. Our test audience did not find either of these flaws sufficient cause to not buy these outfits.

A listing of new garments and outfit available, from Mr. Magellan's invitation to the Grand Opening:

Again, both of the stores we looked at this week came to us highly recommended by the discerning readers of SLI - and we thank you for your suggestions! We're still looking for places to review, so if you have a favorite men's store which has clothing, accessories, shoes, skins, hair, gadgets, or anything else you can think of, let us know. If our test audience buys something, we'll write it up the store here.

Jeepers Creepers - Eponymous Trenchmouth

Boots and Shoes(Both), Industrial, Smart casual, Formal.

I am seriously impressed with the quality of the shoes and boots created by Eponymous Trenchmouth, under the Jeepers Creepers label. Each item available under this label is clean, elegant and unimpeded by unnecessary detail. Most of the pieces are bling-free, except where bling is subtly used to enhance the look of naturally shiny adornments. A different shoe or boot is provided for each foot, making for greater verisimilitude. Many of the shoes and boots come with an optional in-built walk, appropriate to the intended gender of the wearer. Men's shoes and boots are available in various sizes; depending on the line, somewhere between a size 20 and a size 35.

There are six lines of shoes and boots currently under this label: Strike! for men's and women's bowling shoes, Clog for rugged, easy-wearing slip-ons, Rigger for tough yet good-looking boots, Trashville for massive biker boots, Hawkes & Healey for a classic and elegant appearance, and Rebel for a stylish look. There is also Giddyap, the men's horse riding boot.

Not only are all the shoes and boots available well crafted and good looking, but there has been an obvious improvement between some of the older ranges and the new Rebel line - in the Rebels, prim work can barely be seen, there is hardly even an impression that these shoes were made in a non-malleable material, and texturing has become more subtle and realistic.

The Rebel line is decidedly my favorite: the base textures are excellent, and combine with the highlighting and shadowing for an exemplary finish on each shoe. Detailing is accurate and true-to-life; the stitching is reminiscent of hand-stitched shoes I've seen in real life. It really makes you feel like you could take these shoes from the screen and wear them in the physical world.

Jeepers Creepers also has lines of shoes for solely for women.

Nocturnal Threads - Kaia Ennui

Clothing(Both), Boots(Both), Tattoos, Gothic.

Kaia Ennui of Nocturnal Threads (NT) is a excellent purveyor of goods for those customers of a Gothic bent wishing to flesh out their wardrobes. Traditional Gothic, Romantic and Horror themes are apparent throughout the range for men: lace and velvet, skulls, zombies, black, blue and red, and belts and buckles. From the delicate, detailed, and dreamy to the roughened, toughened and texture-complex, NT offers men shirts, pants, complete outfits, boots and tattoos, as well as unisex clothing and hair.

Nothing in the line struck me as being outstanding. I didn't find any signature or must-have pieces. That said, I like the clothing, and our test audience will be adding some of the pieces they bought to their regular wardrobe as staples. Determined efforts have been made to match the seams, with success. Fabric textures are life-like, looking rich and stiff or luxe and fluid as the garment requires. On the garments that I purchased, accessories often replicated in prim-work in other labels, like belts and buckles, have here been done in texture, to good effect. Prices are reasonable for the quality of work on offer, also considering that mostly complete outfits are for sale. There is also much to be said about the quantity of pieces available to choose from in the range.

NT also carries a women's line of clothing and accessories.

In the gallery...

H&H Black & White Oxfords WH
Rebel - James Dean WH

rel="tag">Machinima
The Pixels in Pink ladies are at it again! They've designed their campsite, appropriately named PiP Film Noir, to be a brilliant mix of greyscale and ... pink! The ladies, Torrid Midnight, Zyrra Falcone, Hosequeen McLean, Pukk Abel, Rose Farina, Stella Costello, Fallingwater Cellardoor, Nephilaine Protagonist, and several others, have created an element of mystery and awe that just calls to you.

A very tired, overworked Stella Costello mentioned that she was making a Machinima this morning and I'm sharing it with you! As you can see from the film, there are auctions, vendors, flowers, dancing, a theater, and even PIE! Please stop by and donate or purchase items if you can, as all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Just as a reminder, Relay For Life officially starts at 2pm SLT/PDT today, but the sims are open now to explore.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
