Iris Ophelia on Tonight Live

Iris Ophelia, Fashion Writer, Talented Photographer, and Sweetheart Extraordinaire, was recently interviewed live on in-world interview program Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe. In it, she's as adorable as I know her to be (full disclosure: she's a friend), and converses on a range of subjects including fashion, blogging, and her photography.

Don't mind the voice lag; the interview was done over Skype, with Iris in Canada and Paisley in Australia. It's an all-too-brief glimpse into the mind of someone I wish I could spend more time with. Enjoy!

"This is going to be as big as the world wide web"

Or so they say. Metaversed's 57 Miles has the podcast up from the panel with Gartner. Attending were 57 Miles, Steve Prentice of Gartner, Robert Bloomfield of Cornell university's Johnson School, Fiona Gallagher, Sun Microsystems' lead in Second Life, and Joel Greenberg, VP marketing and innovation for Electric Sheep Company.

Skype was off for some hours around the time of the event so it was handled in voice. Miles has heroically edited it all together in a 50MB MP3. Go grab the audio file from Metaversed.

Linden Lab takes the communication out of the virtual world

As we head towards the final deployment of 'bHear' or voice (we'll call it bHear for simplicity further down) in the official viewer (possibly as soon as next week or the week after, depending on which sources you listen to), debate is getting stronger - not on anything to do with the segregative issues surrounding text and voice, but on a rather more interesting practical and psychological effect: The user interface cutting you off from the virtual world.

Teen Machinima: Memoir of Kit

Since there aren't many teens on the Teen Grid, most of them will have recurring roles in the tales of my work there. One of the teens previously mentioned, Kit Axon, turned 18 on the day that I arrived. A frantic Wicked Loudon, a triple threat known for his skins, hair, and Machinima, was eager to continue filming his video memorial to her, so our conversation was cut short. I somehow stumbled upon his Machinima a few days later and, reader be warned, it still makes me cry every time.

It may seem like any other Machinima to the naked eye, but I'm going to provide the necessary insight for you to see what made me emotional. Kit Axon, a resident of the Teen Grid from November 8th, 2005 to March 31st, 2007, was a beloved resident, a social butterfly, and pose maker. She left behind her best friend, Lucky Figtree, whom still has over two years before she arrives on the Main Grid. Together they cried on Skype, as her time was slipping away. If she were to lose connection, she'd be gone forever.

In his film, Wicked captured some of his favorite moments with Kit, which also give us another peek at what islands look like on the Teen Grid. They can be seen water skiing, dancing, hugging, and crying together throughout various parts of the grid. I'm even in a few fade shots in my tiny cow avatar! The part that REALLY gets me is at the very end. I don't want to spoil it for you, but have your tissues ready. If you are as touched by Wicked's Machinima as I was, leave a comment on his YouTube page!

Second Talk launches public beta of Second Life voice chat system

Second Talk KioskSecond Talk, is a skype-based voice chat system rolling out a public beta right now, courtesy of Centric. Stop in at once of Second Talk's inworld kiosks, and grab a Second Talk headset. Put it on your avatar. According to the documentation, whenever you're in range of others wearing the Second Talk headset (and presumably not anywhere set no-script), you'll be prompted to see if you want to talk to them.

You'll need a skype account to make this all work, and instructions on plugging your skype details into the headset are provided with the instruction card. Second Talk are looking into integrating with the open source client. I was unable to actually try this out myself due to certain personal incapacities relating to voip communications.

Who will hear you? Who will hear me?

When you ignore my text, you ignore meAmong some quarters of our expanding virtual worlds, there's a big push towards sound. Live music, voice-chat, and so on. Philip Linden does Town Halls by voice. People want to pull out their headsets and address the people around them. But what if they can't hear you?

You're in a public place, and espy someone you want to talk to. You lean on your push-to-talk key, and say hi, and ask how they are. Meanwhile they just stand there. Are they ignoring you? Are they being rude? Maybe they just can't hear you. Some people are in Second Life for business, they might not have any speakers on their computer -- and headphones are much frowned on in the workplace if there's any chance that they might interfere with you being able to hear co-workers or speak on the phone. The business-person in Second Life probably can't hear you.

The second major class are the handicapped. Second Life has many deaf or hearing-impaired residents -- it's a great environment for them. Likewise some people cannot speak -- or cannot speak the all the languages they can read or write. Some can type a perfectly acceptable grade of English, but have no idea how the language sounds, never having had much opportunity to hear an English-speaker. They probably can't understand you speaking, anyway, let alone respond in sounds you can understand.

SL Journal: May 30, 2006

Logged on to discover about 10 messages from the Dreams Gazebo competition.  The prize giving was at 5pm SL time, 1 am mine, and I had logged off and gone to sleep instead.  Went to Dreams and took my entry.  There were a couple of prizes on the floor, but no indication about who had won. Searched the forums, and scanned my friends list, no clue.

We had the live run through of the SL version of "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" last night.  Only three of us made the Skype/Pamela conference, and so I twisted Oclee's arm to join us.  As English isn't his first language, that wasn't very fair, but we were desperate.

I noticed that Buxton Malaprop's Skype had a joinee title, and asked him about it.  It turns out that he is a Platinum Joinee member of "Join Me"! I told him that my children had been trying to get me to join Danny Wallace's Join Me organisation for years, had even put little pictures in an envelope, and I hadn't got around to it. If you don't know about Join Me, I highly recommend that you go and rummage around the website.  Even if you aren't at all interested in the organisation, there's some very funny writing there.
