New Scientist Talks with PN

I've just not spent enough time in SL lately, I guess, 'cause before Moo mentioned them to me in a recent IM, I'd never heard of Patriotic Nigras (PN), a self-professed griefer group allegedly far more vicious than W-Hat ever caught fire for being. Interestingly enough, New Scientist magazine of all places has picked up the story and gotten an interview with Mudkips Acronym, one of PN's founders. Unfortunately, the story is locked off to non-subscribers. So I call upon anyone in our audience with a subscription to give us details! Information wants to be free!

Who Are We? - Mecha Dinosaur

Second Life resident, Mecha DinosaurThis is the 11th in a series of largely demographic interviews that are conducted with established residents, to find out more about them and their involvement with Second Life, and to contrast the differences between their views and experiences and those of the newer residents. The questions may be tailored slightly for each interview; responses may be edited for purposes of clarity.

Mecha's a charming, witty, intelligent, warm and kind person who devotes a lot of time to helping new residents. She's frequently a gothloli with a gigantic bunny-decorated hammer, but she has plenty of other visually impressive avatars, too.

SLRFL Machinima: Survivors Lap

The Survivors Lap was held at 3pm SLT/PDT. Residents were asked to line up alongside the road and observe about 30 minutes of silence in honor of the survivors. This year's lap was done a bit different in that their caregivers were also able to take the track. As the last survivor passed forged on, we were able to follow them and complete the lap.

Since W-Hat built the Ceremony Centre sim, a group of them lined up in formation to salute the passersby. There were so many! I was able to capture footage of a bunch of them coming through, by walking, running, rollerskating, particle floating, and flying. I hope you're as touched by the Lap as I am.

(Edited to change wording for more sensitive wording.)

SLRFL: Team Locations

There are a lot of residents cheering on specific teams, but with 32 sims, the campsites may be hard to locate. Christopher Sterling has provided me with a map of the locations, which I've deciphered and SLURL'd for you! Please keep in mind that the sims are listed in the order that they would go around the track, and the teams listed left to right, top to bottom.

Please read on for the complete listing of team locations ...

W-Hat Invites Public to 3rd Birthday Bash

Decomposing Monstre, of the W-Hat group, passed me an invitation for their 3rd birthday party. It will take place on Friday, April 27th, from 6-10pm PDT on the Baku sim. According to the invite, there will be DJs, special guests, and even cake!

If you've never been to a W-Hat party, you're really missing out! They've built a GIGANTIC cake with a museum of their history on the inside, including interesting articles. For example, W-Hat/Voted 5 have been mentioned a whopping *28* times in the Second Life Herald!

I'm definitely going just to see what they do next. See you there!

Second Life mentioned on Daily Show!

Since gaining popularity, Second Life has been used for a number of things, including political campaigns. You may remember the John Edwards plot that was attacked, but that was so last month ago in terms of news! The Daily Show apparently just got word of it, though. Jon Stewart mentions the incident on his show for March 29th, 2007.

He didn't have much to say about it, other than "poo" jokes, but it's nice to see Second Life covered for something other than sex, or success stories that lead others to believe that they can make billions. Room 101, the group responsible for the defacing, would like to set one thing straight, however. The "poo" in question, is actually a chocolate starfish.

Decomposing Monstre Donates Prize Money to Relay For Life

Fox Atomic recently held a Machinima contest in conjunction with Millions of Us to promote their new horror films coming out. Decomposing Monstre appeared to be the front runner in the contest, but was edged out at the last minute by Pierce Portocarrero. He ended up winning the First Place prize, which was $100,000L.

With the Lindens about to burn a hole in his pocket, Mr. Monstre sent an email to the kind Millions of Us staff requesting that the $100,000L be donated to W-Hat's Relay For Life team. Already around 14th place overall in the standings, Deco's prize money bumped them up to a shocking 8th place! It's moments like these that make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Good on ya, Deco!

Interview - Plastic Duck / Gene Replacement

London Memorial
One of the more colorful and contentious figures in SL's three and a half year history is Plastic Duck, later known as Gene Replacement. While it took a little doing, I was able to sit down with him and have a bit of a talk about himself and about Second Life.

He took the third-place prize of Avatar of the Year (2005), bestowed by the Second Life Herald. He's been flamboyant, artistic and edgy. He and some 59 others were famously purged from SL. Some consider him to be a rampaging rakehell, some a leader of a griefing army, some a sort of renaissance technojester, a dark god of ornithophobia.

Truly a lot has been said, done, understood and misunderstood, rumored and misconstrued. So...I didn't ask him about any of that sensationalist nonsense directly. Instead, I wanted to find out more about the man behind the duck.
